It is perhaps a sad time in automotive history as we lay to rest the fifth generation of the Chevrolet Camaro, the ZL1. In recent years, the Camaro has enjoyed a resurgence in popularity, even outdoing its long-time rival of the Ford Mustang. The days of the fifth generation of this sports car rolling off the production line in pristine condition and full of that new-car smell, however, have officially come to an end.
The last 2015 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 was recently put together at Oshawa Assembly Plant in Ontario, Canada, which is where the model has been produced since 2009. This landmark car won’t find its way into just any garage; it will be displayed at the GM Heritage Museum for enthusiasts of all sorts to enjoy.
Just as Camaro fans are likely saddened by the end of an era, so are Chevrolet executives. Al Oppenheiser, chief engineer of the Camaro program, had this to say: “We take the sacred walk today along with the last 5th generation Camaro, a ZL1 that will find its home at our GM Heritage Museum. Emotional for all of the right reasons, this is a day filled with many highs and lows, as we recount 7 years of memories with our Oshawa family. This is why the Camaro is more than a car to us.”
While the fifth generation Camaro ZL1 is bowing out, the 2016 Camaro is on its way to turn this time of grief into one of joy. The brand’s production is returning to the United States, and the coming incarnation of this classic car promises a wider variety of customization options and three engine choices – a 3.6-L V6, a 6.2-L V8, and a 2.0-L Turbo.
With just a short time until the sixth-generation Camaro’s arrival, the folks over at Ford with Mustangs may not celebrate their dominance in their rivalry for long. The Chevrolet Camaro is ever-changing, and it’s here to stay.
