Anticipated extra demand for the 2016 Camaro, which was named Motor Trend’s Car of the Year, has motivated General Motor’s decision to add a third shift and consequently more than 500 hourly and salaried jobs to its Lansing Grand River plant, it was anticipated extra demand for the 2016 Camaro.
The addition of a third shift will increase the plant’s workforce to approximately 2,300 when hiring is completed. The sixth generation Camaro, which began shipping to customers in November, as well as the award-winning Cadillac CTS and ATS which are also produced at Lansing Grand River.
Since its introduction, the Camaro has earned praise from customers and media alike. Motor Trend editors named said, “The Chevrolet Camaro is a better, more entertaining car to drive than a BMW 3 Series.”
Third shift hiring is well underway at the plant, and the shift is scheduled to begin in second quarter.
“This is the result of the award-winning vehicles Lansing Grand River produces and the confidence GM has in our team to build world-class quality for our customers,” said Mike Trevorrow, Lansing’s regional plant manager.
“This is an exciting time at LGR. We just added the Chevrolet Camaro to our vehicle line up and now we get to expand the UAW-GM family, which will bring the plant to full capacity. What a great way to start the New Year,” added UAW Local 652 President, Mike Green.
